Som and Tik in Thailand Part 4

I hope you've all had such a wonderful Thanksgiving. My parents left town yesterday, and we had the best time whale watching in Anacortes and celebrating my 28th birthday.

I'm really excited to share these portraits of Som and Tik on their one year anniversary today! So much has happened in the past year, and I'm happy to be able to relive such an incredible experience while showing these photos to you.

Happy anniversary, Som and Tik!

The Ballerina

In June, Tova had her first ballet performance. In July, her first ballet camp. There are many photos, I know. I just couldn't help myself.

Let me detail the performance photos. The ones with the top hat without a branch are from Tova's rehearsal. She did a wonderful job. They went through the dance twice, and the second try wasn't as good as the first. Still, the girls were wonderful. But when they got off stage, Tova had a meltdown. She was sobbing and she ended up telling me that she wasn't good enough. She hadn't done a good enough job, and she wanted to try again. For about 5 full minutes, she tried to get back on stage, with me trying to calm her down and get out of the auditorium. It was heart breaking. And a hard hit of reality that Tova is very competitive and a perfectionist. We tried to convince her that she did her best and was even fantastic, but it didn't fly. Honestly, we were caught off guard and weren't sure how to handle it. We've never imposed performance-based expectations onto Tova, so this seemed to come out of nowhere. The next day at the performance, she just couldn't shake it. She decided to be with her friends, and she even went on stage. But then she just stood there for a few minutes, dropped her head in her hands, and started sobbing. One of her teachers, Mrs. Stephanie, had to come carry her off stage. David and I went to get her and give her comfort. She wouldn't accept her bouquet of flowers, saying she didn't deserve them. We finally calmed her down and brought her into the audience to watch the other dances. When it was time for her stage call to take a bow, she decided to go with her friends, but had another meltdown. A friend's mother ended up carrying her across the stage. And since then, shockingly, she has talked fondly of the whole experience. We're completely baffled but glad. Ballet is still one of her favorite things.
